Written by Dale Buckey @ Wireless.MD 9/9/11

This may seem trivial to us today but hearing that the strength of doctors’ iPad adoption has caught the health care IT industry by surprise, is kind of an understatement? Still, there are two things Dr. Larry Nathanson can’t work without when he’s on duty in the emergency ward: his stethoscope and his iPad.

Watch the video here. Is the iPad The New Stethoscope?

After nearly a year using the tablet, it has become an integral tool for treating patients.

“As I am walking from room to room, I know who I need to see next,” he explained, scrolling through the virtual emergency room patient board on the iPad.

“I definitely feel lost when I don’t have this on a shift,” he said.

As the director of emergency medicine at Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Nathanson was among the first doctors at the hospital to buy an iPad the day it launched. He paid for it himself, but it has more than paid off in the time he saves not having to chase down records.

“Patients often have a lot of questions, and I am able to answer them immediately with the latest data in real time,” Nathanson said. “I can sit there at the beside and I can go over what’s going on.”

When it comes to treating surgical patients, being able to pull up diagrams and x-rays at their bedside has been a real game changer for B.I. Deaconess Dr. Henry Feldman.

“The number of times I’ve had patients say to me ‘That’s the first time I’ve understood my disease’ — I mean, it happens all the time to me. To me, that’s validation as a doctor,” he said.

Seems to me to be just another step in the Wireless Health evolution.

Also….

There’s a nice video over at Technology Review on the benefits of Wireless Health with Doctors and staff using the iPad. You can see the video at this link http://www.technologyreview.com/video/?vid=745 Technology Review, which is published by MIT, is only allowing the video to be watched from their site directly…..

SCHIMPFF, MD from the KevinMD.com blog

I interviewed about 150 medical leaders just a few years ago for my book The Future of Medicine – Megatrends in Healthcare. Not one mentioned wireless devices as a coming megatrend. How fast the world changes! Nowadays everyone has a cell phone and we rarely stop to think that just two decades ago almost no one had them. We have a laptop or tablet computer that can access information from the web at very high rates of speed; again it is hard to remember when this wasn’t so. And those with smart phones have numerous “apps” – to check traffic conditions, find the nearest Starbucks, or play games. But these and other devices that use wireless technology will lead to major changes in the delivery of health care in the coming years. This is another of those coming medical megatrends.

I have written before about the device at home that wirelessly sends the heart failure patient’s weight into the doctor’s office each morning. If his weight starts to go up, it will be flagged and he will be called by the nurse with a change in diuretic prescription before he even notices more shortness of breath. He will feel better, he will not have needed to visit the doctor’s office, make a sudden trip to the ER or be admitted urgently to the hospital. Better care at lower expense. The diabetic patient can have a similar device that sends her blood sugar measurements in. If the pattern changes, it will be noted and she will get a call from the doctor’s office to make adjustments before difficulties set in. Once again it is better care at lower expense. And coming soon will be a monitor the size of a Band-Aid that measures blood glucose continuously. This is much better than sporadic finger sticks because it will not miss drops (hypoglycemia) or spikes (hyperglycemia) that intermittent measurements don’t pick up. And the “band aid” sends the information wirelessly to a device (perhaps her smart phone) that collects and monitors it.

By: Chris Gullo | Aug 26, 2011

Over the past three years, research firms including InMedica, Juniper, Chilmark, ABI, In-Stat, IDC, and Manhattan have been predicting the future size of and eventual revenues generated by mobile health services. This week MobiHealthNews has compiled its list of ten predictions for the next five years of mobile health — including prognostications for both consumer and enterprise — beginning with one that has already come to pass.

81 percent of physicians using smartphones by 2012

Manhattan Research has repeatedly predicted that by 2012, 81 percent of physicians would own a smartphone. That level of adoption already occurred in 2011, according to a May 2011 report from Manhattan. The original prediction came from a 2010 Taking the Pulse report, which tracked physician adoption rates of various information technologies. In 2001 only about 30 percent of physicians used smartphones, while in 2009 some 64 percent of physicians were users. Physician smartphone adoption outpaces the general US adult population’s adoption of smartphones, which now stands at just north of 30 percent.

Remote Patient Monitoring $1.9B by 2014

Revenues from remote patient monitoring services that use mobile networks will rise to $1.9 billion globally by 2014, according to Juniper Research’s 2010 report, “Mobile Healthcare Opportunities: Monitoring, Applications & mHealth Strategies 2010-2014.” Juniper’s prediction is not the first to tackle the question of the mobile health industry’s opportunity in the next four years, but like the others it narrows the industry down to a specific set of services: In this case, remote patient monitoring.

More than 60 percent of smartphone users have iPhones, and virtually all the tablet users had iPads, according to the study.

Physicians overall are adopting mobile technology at an exponential rate, according to Quantia’s data. More than 80 percent of the survey’s respondents say they own a mobile device, compared to only 50 percent of the general U.S. population, according to the Nielsen Company’s “2011 Mobile Connected Device Report.” Forty-four percent of those who don’t currently own a mobile device say they plan to buy one this year.

Microsoft’s untethered personal health record HealthVault now is accessible via mobile devices, announced Sean Nolan, chief architect of the Microsoft Health Solutions Group, on his Family Health Guy blog last week. Currently, a software development kit and sample apps only are available for Windows Phone 7, but SDKs for Apple iOS and Google Android aren’t far behind. “It’s become completely obvious that mobile devices are rapidly taking over as the primary way that folks communicate and compute in their daily lives,” Nolan wrote. “This makes complete sense for health, where virtually all meaningful activity happens away from our laptops: office visits, emergencies, workouts, daily glucose testing, sleeping, you name it.”

TechNavio says its report, Global Patient Monitoring System 2010-2014, is based on extensive research and input from industry experts, vendors, and end users. Among the companies factored into the report are Philips Healthcare, GE Healthcare, Omron Healthcare, Drager Medical Gmbh, and Johnson and Johnson.

“Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) is greatly minimizing hospital stays, resulting in a reduction of the cost of healthcare delivery. Thus, RPM helps healthcare centers reduce costs and increase business opportunities for healthcare service providers while integrating systems and providing necessary operational facilities. As a result, the Patient Monitoring Systems market stands to gain,” TechNavio revealed in a press release.

On Thursday, Verizon released a new smartphone mobile application that guides BlackBerry and Android users (both doctors and patients) to the pharmacies and medical facilities where prescription drugs can be purchased at the lowest cost possible.

The Medco Pharmacy mobile app, which is now available for download in V CAST Apps, provides information about out-of-pocket costs for any prescription drug and lower-cost options specific to a person’s prescription drug plan, as well as drug interaction alerts based on the patient’s prescription history – even if the patient is treated by several doctors or fills prescriptions at many different pharmacies.

The new projections are part of a new report published recently by RNCOS where it’s suggested the growth will be driven not only by healthcare reform and the implementation of eHealth systems, but also by a population that will demand, and increasingly be able to afford, quality services. While the report focused on healthcare IT in general, the most interesting data had to do with mobile technology within healthcare, or mHealth.

The global patient Monitoring System market will reach $9.3 billion in 2014.

One of the key factors contributing to this growth is the technological advancements in the Remote Patient Monitoring market. “However,” the research analysts at TechNavio add, “the complexity involved in return on investments for high-end solutions could be a challenge to the growth of this market.”

Given that Americans cumulatively spend 500 million hours in their vehicles each week, the automobile is an undeniably important platform in which to implement new heathcare technology systems.

“The research project between WellDoc and Ford demonstrates how adults with type 2 diabetes can manage their disease using the WellDoc DiabetesManager System through Ford’s SYNC voice-activated in-car connectivity system,” the companies stated in a joint press release.
